CCA Health Mission team traveled to Trinidad and Tobago and provided medical and dental services at no cost to the less privileged and low income residents in the Laventille and Tunapuna communities, from 22 May thru 25 May 2017. The team comprised of Dr. C. Bilston Clarke MD, Dr. William Nerestant DDS, Caroline Seignon ARNP, Nurses: Esther Graham, Merle George, Leah Clendening and Yolande G. Padmore, Dental Assts: Betzi Abreu, Austin Taylor and Allison Padmore Haynes, Support Staff: Gretel Graham, Angella Beckles, Pauline Clarke, Ingdra Zaw and Jessie Thompson.
On Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd the team was based at the Gonzales Community Center area treating both adults and children. Dr. Clarke was assisted by Dr. Reatha-Leigh Padmore a local Primary Care Physician. On Monday, 48 patients were treated and 72 on Tuesday of which 50% were in need of reading glasses. Several patients in need of eye exams were referred to the Ophthalmologist and Optometrist.
Dr. Nerestant and his dental team served a total of 73 patients both days. Sixty percent had extractions.
On Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th the team was based at the New Testament Church of God in Tunapuna treating both adults and children. Of the 149 pre-registered patients, 142 were treated. On Wednesday Dr. Clarke provided care and on Thursday, Dr. Gerard Antoine a local MD from the Stroke and Diabetes Center assisted Dr. Clarke. Thirty-one (31%) of the patients had hypertension and diabetes which is very prominent among in the community. Due to abnormal blood sugar levels three patients were referred to the hospital for urgent care.
Dr. Sherline Onika Chase a local Dentist and her Assistant treated 40 dental patients. Dr. Sheena Clarke another local Dentist also provided exams.
In summary, although several types of medications were available to treat the immediate needs of the communities served, there was still a need for many other brands and more reading glasses. Based on the population served in both communities, informational topics on Diabetes, Hypertension and Dental care will be a great benefit to all.
The Health Team wish to extend Heartfelt Thanks to our Supporters and Sponsors for making this Outreach Trip possible and giving us the opportunity to serve others in need.
